f%20climate%20change%20in%20the%20marine%20environment%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22M.%20H.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Carr%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22S.%20P.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Robinson%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22C.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Wahle%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22G.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Davis%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22S.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Kroll%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22S.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Murray%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22E.%20J.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Schumacker%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22M.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Williams%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22The%20several%20forms%20of%20ecological%20spatial%20connectivity%20-%20population%2C%20genetic%2C%20community%2C%20ecosystem%20-%20are%20among%20the%20most%20important%20ecological%20processes%20in%20determining%20the%20distribution%2C%20persistence%20and%20productivity%20of%20coastal%20marine%20populations%20and%20ecosystems.%20Ecological%20marine%20protected%20areas%20%28MPAs%29%20focus%20on%20restoring%20or%20maintaining%20marine%20populations%2C%20communities%2C%20or%20ecosystems.%20All%20ecological%20MPAs%20-%20no%20matter%20their%20specific%20focus%20or%20objectives%20-%20depend%20for%20their%20success%20on%20incorporating%20ecological%20spatial%20connectivity%20into%20their%20design%2C%20use%20%28i.e.%20application%29%2C%20and%20management.%20Though%20important%2C%20a%20synthesis%20of%20the%20implications%20of%20ecological%20spatial%20connectivity%20for%20the%20design%2C%20use%2C%20and%20management%20of%20MPAs%2C%20especially%20in%20the%20face%20of%20a%20changing%20global%20climate%2C%20does%20not%20exist.%20We%20synthesize%20this%20information%20and%20distill%20it%20into%20practical%20principles%20for%20design%2C%20use%2C%20and%20management%20of%20MPAs%20and%20networks%20of%20MPAs.%20High%20population%20connectivity%20among%20distant%20coastal%20ecosystems%20underscores%20the%20critical%20value%20of%20MPA%20networks%20for%20MPAs%20and%20the%20populations%20and%20ecosystems%20between%20them.%20High%20ecosystem%20connectivity%20among%20coastal%20ecosystems%20underscores%20the%20importance%20of%20protecting%20multiple%20connected%20ecosystems%20within%20an%20MPA%2C%20maximizing%20ecosystem%20connectivity%20across%20MPAs%2C%20and%20managing%20ecosystems%20outside%20MPAs%20so%20as%20to%20minimize%20influxes%20of%20detrimental%20organisms%20and%20materials%20into%20MPAs.%20Connectivity-informed%20MPAs%20and%20MPA%20networks%20-%20designed%20and%20managed%20to%20foster%20the%20ecological%20spatial%20connectivity%20processes%20important%20to%20local%20populations%2C%20species%2C%20communities%2C%20and%20ecosystems%20-%20can%20best%20address%20ecological%20changes%20induced%20by%20climate%20change.%20Also%2C%20the%20protections%20afforded%20by%20MPAs%20from%20direct%2C%20local%20human%20impacts%20may%20ameliorate%20climate%20change%20impacts%20in%20coastal%20ecosystems%20inside%20MPAs%20and%2C%20indirectly%2C%20in%20ecosystems%20outside%20MPAs.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222017%5C%2F09%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1002%5C%2Faqc.2800%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221052-7613%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22MVUEWBD8%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-10-20T15%3A47%3A25Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
